The SOAP Method

The SOAP method is a tool I like to use to study the Bible.

S stands for Scripture
O stands for Observation
A stands for Application
P stands for Prayer

I have chosen to read just a few verses at a time from the book I am studying with a journal at my side.

The first thing I do is write out the Scripture verses I am focusing on for that day.

Next I write down Observations I can make about those verses. Just state what I see in the verse- sometimes it feels odd to state the obvious, but I feel that God is not hiding anything from us, so let's just look to see what He said.

Sometimes it takes much prayerful thought to see this next part.  Having made my observations, how can I apply this to my life today.

Finally, I spend time in prayer, be it in praise, confession, submission to His will, or working out my faith with Him.

I love this quote from Charles Spurgeon.  It is precisely why I love this method of study.

"Some people like to read so many [Bible] chapters every day. I would not dissuade them from the practice, but I would rather lay my soul asoak in half a dozen verses all day than rinse my hand in several chapters. Oh, to be bathed in a text of Scripture, and to let it be sucked up in your very soul, till it saturates your heart!"
